Politicians and the Philosophy of Self-Promotion

I would like to point out the two political motives typical of the best leaders.

1. Those who humbly run for office at the instance of others whom they respect—examples of this include George Washington and Ronald Reagan.

2. Those who humbly recognize their unique abilities that are needed in a given situation.

In neither of these cases is the potential leader seeking to elevate himself above others. Most importantly true statesmen do not see themselves as better than others but as "humble servants."

Please find me these people in our government today. A career politician is a self-promoting, egomaniac and should not be trusted with the special stewardship of power that comes with elected office.

Where's Dad?

Unfortunately, not as many people are celebrating Father's Day as should be.

I heard a great illustration this week by Dr. James Dobson at Focus on the Family

"Some years ago a greeting card company decided to do something special for Mother's Day. They set up a table in a federal prison - inviting any inmate who so desired to send a free card to his mom. The lines were so long, they had to make another trip to the factory to get more cards. Due to the success of the event they decided to do the same thing on Father's Day, only this time no one came. Not one prisoner felt the need to send a card to dad, and many had no idea who their father's even were."

Society may ignore the value of fathers and also the family in general, but it cannot ignore the consequences of its neglect. Fathers are such a critical element in the makeup of our social fabric, but this fabric is being ripped and torn because of ideas and attitudes, programs and policies all of which have the end result (either directly or indirectly) of diminishing the role of a father.
